TiVo

Does anyone else take 4 hours to watch a 1 hour show now that they have TiVo?  I love my TiVo, don’t get me wrong.  I hate commercials with a passion.  So, I can’t express to you enough, just how much I love TiVo.  As soon as those 30 second blurbs ‘about how I can enjoy a much greater sex life if I just try Viagra’ come on the screen,  trying to sell me some crap that I don’t want, all I have to do is push fastforwarded and those suckers become like yesterdays lunch.   Something I have consumed and can’t wait to expel.   I do feel as though I am missing out on part of the 21st century.  So many times, people will start talking about funny commercials, like; “you know that one commercial with the guy and the shampoo and “Look at me, now look at your man, now look at me, don’t you wish your man was like me?” comment, and I have no idea what they are talking about.  I suspect it is similar for people who watch no TV and have no idea who  Tony Soprano is or why it’s bad someone thinks he’s sexy.
But the fact that TiVo will let us fast forward and pause our television watching experience has also given me the ability to take an entire day to watch one show. Maybe it’s just me I don’t know.   But I will sit down while eating breakfast and start to watch a totally engrossing and life changing program, like ” Bethany’s Getting Married” or something.  And 5 minutes later I’m done eating.   So, I pause the show.  Then maybe when I get home from dropping the kids off I watch another 10 minutes.  But, inevitably I will need to get up and do something and it is paused again.  This goes on for the entire day until it’s almost 4pm and I realize the kids will be home soon.  I have 10 minutes to just relax, and I sit down to watch some boob-tube and I realize I still haven’t finished the show I was watching at 7 that morning.  I am not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing?  Would my time be spent more productively if I was consuming more than the rantings of some slightly deranged but adorable New Yorker.  Or is it all crap and so it really doesn’t matter anyway?
Why does my TiVo decide for me what programming is better to save?  I mean I will have my favorite shows listed with 3 thumbs up and yet it will still delete these shows before it deletes it’s “Suggested” shows.  “Suggested” shows, who is it kidding?  Really they should be called, “TiVo’s favorites”.   I am convinced that TiVo watches TV all day when I am not around.  And that these “suggested” shows are  just a ploy.   They are there purely for TiVo’s entertainment and not mine.  I don’t want to watch, Sesame Street, or 2 fat chicks in the kitchen!  There is definitely something amiss here.  I keep expecting TiVo to start dictating to me what I should and should not watch.  Will I try someday to record my favorite, “Sons of Anarchy” and have TiVo lie to me and tell me, “That program is not available”?  Or will TiVo at some point come on with some big warning, “You don’t want to watch this show.  What are you stupid?  Only frat boys and pre-pubescent girls should be watching this shit!  Let me suggest a nice, wholesome show like ‘Little House on the Prairie’.”
Needless to say, I think I am going to need to keep an eye on that TiVo.
